During the war, the Germans came up with a revolutionary way of defeating enemy armor, by use of a hollow charged warhead. While most people are familiar with seeing this t4chonlogy on the Panzer Faust, it can also be seen on mistels, with a system being designed to carry a 7,700 pounds bomb. This was to be used against heavily armored enemy ships, with its name to be called Mistel 1.
The warhead that consisted of 3,80 pounds of explosive placed in a very specific space. The front of the warhead was hollow and formed out of a soft metal. At the tip were 4 electrical fuses, that were mounted on a 9-foot-long standoff probe, that would detonate the explosive towards the rear. This would act like a giant shape charge as the mistel hit its target at 400mph, once it dropped.
The only issue with the device is once the pilot lifted off with the device, he could land without releasing the pay load.
