RFZ-2

Undeterred from the recent flying saucer crash which happen with RFZ-1, the Germans went on to build their second type of saucer craft, known as RFZ-2. It used a levitator built by Winfried Schumann, along with a “magnetic field impulser” for control. This flight system was very rudimentary, making it unable to maneuver well. The crafts were only able to make 90, 45, and 22.5 degree turns. This made RFZ-2 unable to be used as a fighter.

However, the design worked well. The biggest problem with this craft was that the cramp interior was over heated. The design worked well and was fitted with a turret along with 2 MG-34 machine guns, located inside a small turret. This made the cock much more cramped. These two factors earned RFZ-2 the nickname “Fliegende Heisswasserflasche” (Flying Hot Water Bottle).

Later in 1941 RFZ-2 would be tasked with providing reconnaissance for a surface raider ship: Atlantis. It worked with the Atlantis for the good part of a year, until the Atlantis was sunk by the allies.

In 1941, however, the RFZ-2 was deployed the surface raider Atlantis in the South Atlantic. The RFZ-2 served as a long-range spotter for the raider which would later bring mining equipment and supplies to Neu Schwabenland prior to its sinking in December 1941.
